Yeovil District Hospital
Yeovil District Hospital is a large general hospital offering a comprehensive health care package. In an average year, it will admit 30,000 patients, its Accident and Emergency department will treat 40,000 people and 90,000 will be seen as out-patients, a further 1300 babies will be born in the maternity unit.
A major consideration for the hospitals management is the security of both staff and patients alike particularly as the hospital operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In order to secure the building and grounds and to protect the staff and patients using the hospital, Telstar was commissioned to analyse the existing security system and to recommend and install suitable upgrades.
Although security was a priority it was also necessary to develop a system that allowed the general public access to most areas of the hospital without the need for cumbersome or expensive monitoring systems.
After consultation, Telstar devised a series of zoned areas incorporating a variety of surveillance and access systems which allowed different levels of access for staff and members of the public.
Strategically positioned CCTV cameras allow security staff to monitor the entire site from one central location with particular empathises on public areas and areas concern such as A&E and the maternity unit.
In order to offer an extra layer of security within the maternity unit, Telstar devised and installed an automated baby alarm system. Each new born would be issued with an unobtrusive tag worn around the ankle and an alarm signal would be activated when the child neared an exit without authorisation.
